Why subcontract the solar instead of doing it in-house
Florida separates the trades under Chapter 489 of the Florida Statutes. Your CCC covers roofing. Detaching and reconnecting a PV array — the DC disconnects, the conductors, the rapid shutdown, the inverter — sits under a solar contractor (CVC) or electrical contractor (EC) license. That’s not a technicality your customer’s insurer, or a plan reviewer, is likely to overlook.
The exposure when a crew handles it anyway:
- Warranty. Module and inverter manufacturers generally void coverage for unlicensed work. The homeowner discovers this a year later, and they call you.
- Permit. Jurisdictions expect the correct license category on the application. Wrong category stalls the job.
- Damage. Cracked modules, sheared MC4 connectors, and a bent rail set are expensive, and they come out of your margin.
- Licensure risk. Working outside your license scope is a DBPR problem, not just a customer-service one.
Handing it to a licensed solar contractor moves all of that off your book and usually costs less than the first claim would.
How we work with roofing contractors
Two models, depending on how you want to run it:
- Subcontract. We work under you. You keep the customer relationship and the whole job on your invoice; we handle the solar scope, the solar permit, and the solar liability.
- Referral handoff. You pass the solar portion to us and we contract with the homeowner directly. You stay out of it entirely.
Either way, we schedule around your tear-off rather than the other way around. Two mobilizations — removal before you start, reinstall once the roof is finished and inspected.
What “detach and reset” covers
- Pre-job assessment. Array condition, mounting system, roof type, inverter and rapid-shutdown setup documented before anything moves.
- Permit. We pull the solar permit and sequence it against yours.
- Removal. System de-energized, panels labeled by string position, stored flat and covered on site or transported. Rails, flashing, and penetration hardware removed so you get a clean deck.
- Your crew works. No panels to cut around, no array to protect, no callback risk from someone standing on modules.
- Reinstall. New flashing and sealed penetrations on the new roof — we never reuse old boots. Panels return to original string positions.
- Commissioning and documentation. Energized, inverter verified, production confirmed against the pre-removal baseline, and a record handed to you and the homeowner.
Beyond PV
We’re one of very few Florida contractors still servicing solar hot water collectors and pool solar blankets. If you’re quoting a re-roof on a house with an old thermal system on it and nobody will touch it, that’s us. Note that pool solar panels past a certain age are often too brittle to reinstall — we’ll tell you that before removal rather than after.

Permitting differs meaningfully by jurisdiction — Hillsborough runs roof-mounted PV as an Electrical Trade permit through HillsGovHub and requires a recorded Notice of Commencement before first inspection, while Clearwater runs through Accela with the plans review fee due at submittal. We handle whichever applies.
